My First Skype Experience – not so good

As you may know, I’ve been trying to figure out how I’m going to continue doing my coaching calls with clients while I’m traveling in Europe.  Of course, Skype is the first thing everyone mentions when I ask about this issue.  So I figured, "Ok, I’m not going to worry too much about this, Skype will be the clear answer".  Until yesterday.  Yesterday a potential client scheduled a call with me from Kuala Lumpur.  He assured me that he was happy to make the call because he had Skype.  I secretly rejoiced that this would be a great and easy way to have a first experience with this product.  No sooner did I pick up the phone than the static began.  Still, even with the heavy static, I was able to understand him well enough.  Then I started to speak. The echo that followed my voice was so loud and so disturbing that I could barely concentrate on what I was trying to say.  Eventually, he said he could not understand me and asked to call back on a land line.  I have no idea what rates he paid after that.  I probably don’t want to know.  I haven’t completely given up on Skype yet.  I understand that connection speed and quality of the headset can make a big difference.  I also understand that connection speed should not be a problem in the Hague.  However, southern France, I am told is a different story.  Perhaps there will be two solutions for this issue.  I’ll continue looking into Skype but now I’m turning towards the SIM card possibility.

I feel your pain. Well, it is possible that I can’t but you know. :-)
The process of searching for a reasonable phone to use in multiple countries in Europe is daunting at best. I am not planning on using the phone as much as you; however, it would be nice to have a cell to use in all countries of the EU.
For me, I have searched United Mobile and Modal. *cha-ching* Why in the world would I pay for someone to call me(via Modal)?!?! C’est la vie. The prospect of having a separate phone number with each SIM card in separate countries is not what I’m looking forward too. Keep researching.
On a different thread…transitioning from steady work, steady paycheck to freelance is difficult. I am in the process of saving money for our sabbatical and my career change this Sept 2006. Moving from steady paycheck to don’t know when the next check is coming from – scary. I might be doing too many things at once…learning a new trade(Fraud Investigator to Technical Writer), saving money and moving to EU. *sigh*
I do feel your pain to this extent: So much to do before the “move”.
Good luck and keep us informed. Misery loves company. :-)

I’ve been looking this morning at http://www.etelestial.com . They have and “Explorer” SIM card that works across many countries in Europe. It might be something to check out. I”ll write more about it tomorrow!
