New Guide for Ugly Americans

I just read an article on CNN.com about a new guide for traveling executives on how not to be an "Ugly American".  Not surprisingly, our public image as Americans has dwindled signficantly lately.  Even before the current political climate we were seen as loud, arrogant and self centered according to this article.

I believe that the typical Nomad differs significantly from the typical tourist or traveling executive in that most of us are traveling or doing extended stays in countries because of a true curiosity and interest in other places and cultures.  Hopefully most of us are projecting an alternative image for Americans.

You could say the guideline should be as simple as, "When in Rome, do what the Romans do". However, I think the root is a deeper issue.  So often you will see tourists or traveling executives visiting abroad who obviously have no interest in the place they are visiting and who reflect an underlying belief that the ways of foreign countries are not "different" but "inferior" to their own.  If you hold this underlying belief it will show through in facial expression, in body language, and in your ability to have meaningful conversations with citizens of the place you visit.

I remember fellow American colleague when I worked in Japan who although she was outwardly polite had a habit of sitting with a hankerchief pressed over her nose and mouth any time we were in a room where the Japanese were smoking.  Yes, we know that breathing second hand smoke is bad for our health.  Yes, in America many of us are disgusted by the smell of smoke. And yes, if you are trying to be accepted in another culture and you demonstrate your disgust it doesn’t win you friends.

Finally, the article makes a great point on the power of listening.  As Americans we need to be particularly aware that we are in general fairly poor listeners and that this is a skill we must really hone during our travels.  Again, if your underlying belief system generates from a spirit of curiosity, interest in others and a respect for differing customs, foods, etc. then this will be evident in your behavior as you travel abroad.
