I always try to find a hotel next to a tall landmark like a tower or famous building. This allows you to roam the city on foot and always have a visual bearing on where you are. My wife and I spend most of our travels walking around the city so physical landmarks are very important.

Don't forget a decent office chair. Remote telecommuters will find any old table or desk will do, but many moderate to cheap hotels and guest houses don't provide a chair or desk. If you do get one, it's likely to be a straight back type that gets really uncomfortable after an hour or so of computing or writing.
