- Acer Aspire TimelineX 1830T (11" screen). Has a lot of punch for its size. It comes well equipped with a much faster processor than the 11-inch MacBook Air (a 1.4-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) and gobs more storage space for $100 less. This is a perfect back-up notebook for the serious nomad. $799.
- HP Pavilion dm1z (11" screen). Reasonably priced netbook. AMD E-350 processor is fast and battery efficient. Fast 7,200rpm hard drive. Well-designed. Full size keyboard. Over 7 hours of battery life. Very affordable at $525.
- Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (13" screen). ) The outside looks the same, but the guts of the 2010 version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro have been revamped. This thin-and-light laptop now features a faster processor and double the graphics performance. Better yet, it lasts nearly 8 hours on a charge. $1199.
- HP Elitebook 8440w (14" screen). May be the best business notebook on the market today. It's ruggedized for travel, and it features a dual-core Intel Core i7 processor, workstation-class Nvidia graphics, and speedy hard drives. Plus, it has a 3-year International warranty. $1600.
- HP Envy 14 (14" screen). The HP Envy 14 starts at $999 in its base configuration, with a Core i3-370M CPU at 2.4 GHz, 4GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. Cosmetically, the Envy 14 is a real winner. The fully aluminum body is attractive and rigid, giving the system a sturdy feel and a pleasant look with clean lines. $1289.
- The Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 (14." screen). The Core i5-520M processor, 4 gigs of RAM, and the 64-bit version of Windows 7 together provide plenty of power. This IdeaPad doesn't break from Lenovo's usual chic styling for the line, with large hinges, a geometric pattern laid into the black case, and a bold red-orange line bisecting the case. $1199.
- Dell XPS 15 (15" screen). A desktop replacement laptop, is a wonderland of lavish features, cutting-edge components, and ,overall, one of the best laptops [PCmag.com] has tested. $1115.
